From 3 to 12 November 2026, the 11th International Educational Campaign “Great Ethnographic Dictation” will take place across all constituent entities of the Russian Federation and in other countries around the world.
The Dictation was first held in 2016 at the initiative of the Ministry of National Policy of the Udmurt Republic and young activists from Udmurtia.
The Great Ethnographic Dictation is an educational project designed to introduce participants to the cultures of the peoples living in Russia and to assess the general level of ethnocultural literacy.
The Dictation takes the form of a test consisting of 30 questions common to all participants nationwide.
The Dictation is open to residents of the Russian Federation and other countries, regardless of age, educational background, social status, ethnicity, religion, or citizenship.
Participants are given 45 minutes to complete the Dictation. The maximum possible score is 100 points.
The Great Ethnographic Dictation seeks to draw the attention of the general public, government authorities, and the media to the quality of ethnocultural education. It also aims to assess the population’s competence in ethnography and cultural studies and subsequently identify gaps in the overall body of humanities knowledge among citizens of the Russian Federation.
The campaign aims to assess citizens’ level of ethnographic literacy and their knowledge of the peoples living within the Russian Federation, while drawing public attention to the need of developing effective tools for maintaining interethnic peace and harmony in a multinational country.
"The Great Ethnographic Dictation is not an exam or a formal test of knowledge. It is an opportunity to discover the remarkable diversity of our country, to appreciate the scale of its historical journey, and to understand that respect for the traditions and cultures of all its peoples is what provides a strong foundation for our unity as a nation.
I am confident that, for each of you, taking part in the Dictation will be a chance to learn something new and another reason to be proud of Russia and its unique cultural diversity."
